HP Designjet 5500 Series Printers - TWI: Continuous Spinning up Disk, Boot Failed, or Hard Disk Failure Messages

In this document:

The printer is displaying any of the following messages: Boot Failed, Hard Disk Failure, or a continuous Spinning up Disk message. Most of these issues occur during printer initialization and are commonly caused by poor connections between the printer and the memory DIMM(s), BOOT ROM DIMM, or the HP Jetdirect EIO network card. Common internal hardware failures include the Hard Disk Drive (HDD), the Power Supply Unit (PSU) and the Main PCA. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the problem and replace the necessary parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality before continuing with the remaining steps. Verify functionality by turning the printer on and successfully printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn the printer off using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.
  2. After 10-15 seconds, turn the main power switch on.
  3. If no error appears, attempt to verify printer functionality.
  4. If the error re-appears, continue with the remaining steps.
  5. Turn the printer off.
  6. Remove and reseat all memory and the BOOT ROM DIMM (leave the rear-access cover open to check LED status in Step 8).
  1. Turn the printer on. If no error appears, verify functionality.
  2. If the problem persists, check the LED's on the Main PCA (green and orange). If both LEDs are off (with the printer turned on) the PSU is defective, continue with Step 29.
  3. If the LEDs are on, turn the printer off and continue with the remaining steps.
  4. Remove the BOOT ROM DIMM and replace with the new DIMM.
  1. Turn the printer on; if no error appears verify printer functionality.
  2. If the error re-appears, turn the printer off and re-install original DIMM.
  3. Remove and reseat the HP Jetdirect card.
  4. Turn the printer on; if no error appears, verify functionality.
  5. If the error re-appears, turn the printer off.
  6. Remove the HP Jetdirect card and install it into the other available EIO slot.
  7. Turn the printer on.
  8. If no error appears, note that one EIO slot on the Main PCA is defective and will require a Main PCA replacement.
  1. If the error appears with the EIO card in both slots, turn the printer off and remove the EIO card altogether.
  2. Turn the printer on.
  3. If the problem does not occur with the EIO card removed, verify printer functionality and replace the EIO card.
  1. If the problem persists, turn the printer off and re-install the EIO card back into the original slot.
  2. Check and re-seat the HDD cables.
  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. If there is no error, verify functionality.
  3. If the error continues, replace the HDD (refer to page 8-72 of the service manual). Following replacement, perform a Backup EEROM service utility (instructions listed below) and attempt to verify functionality.
  4. If the error continues, leave the printer on and open the small Main PCA cover on the back of the printer (DIMM and Memory access cover).
  5. Check the LEDs (orange and green) on the Main PCA.
  6. If the LEDs are not on, replace the PSU (refer to page 8-83 of the service manual).
  7. Following PSU replacement, attempt to verify functionality.
  8. If the problem persists and/or both LED's are on, replace the Main PCA and the HDD Controller (refer to page 8-79 of the service manual).
  9. Following replacement, perform a Backup EEROM (instructions below).
  1. Verify printer functionality.
