HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers - TWI: Noise During Media Advance

In this document:

Noise may occur for a variety of reasons, not all of which indicate a hardware problem. Some possible causes are unsupported media, media of an unusual width, overdrive assembly bushings, damaged spindle, or damaged entry roller. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the error and to replace the necessary parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality before continuing with the remaining steps. Verify functionality by turning the printer on and successfully printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Verify that the noise is occurring during media advancement and not being confused with a different noise exhibited by the printer.
  2. Verify media being used is a standard supported width (24-inch to 60-inch).
  1. Verify media is correctly loaded onto the spindle and that the spindle is not damaged, replace the spindle if necessary.
  2. Load a sheet of media (minimum 8.5-inches wide by 22-inches long). The printer does not recognize sheet media smaller than 22 inches long.
  1. If the noise continues, remove the sheet of media and apply 3-5 drops of synthetic oil down the center 14 holes (42-inch) or 20 holes (60-inch) of Center Platen (as described in Figure 1 below).

Figure 1: Location of holes on the center platen that require lubrication (1000 series printer pictured)
example

  1. Following lubrication of the center platen, try loading sheet media again.
  2. If noise has disappeared, load roll media and attempt to verify functionality.
  3. If the noise re-occurs, repeat Steps 5 and 6 (not exceeding 10 drops in any of the holes).
  4. Attempt to load both sheet and roll media to verify functionality.
  5. If the noise persists, continue with the remaining steps.
  6. Check the entry roller for damage or problems and replace it if necessary (refer to pg. 8-111 of the service manual).
  7. Replace the Center platen (refer to pg. 8-117 of the service manual).
  8. Following replacement, turn the printer on and perform the Carriage Height and Scan-Axis calibrations.
