HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers - TWI: System Error 0B0003 XXXXXXXX

In this document:

A problem has been detected with the ISS PCA or Main PCA. Possible causes include poor cable connections on the ISS or Main PCA, a faulty ISS PCA, or a faulty Main PCA. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the error and to replace the necessary parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn the printer off (use the main power switch located on the back of the printer).
  2. Disconnect all data cables from the printer (network/parallel).
  3. Verify the EIO card being used is a supported HP Jetdirect card, and reseat the card if necessary.
  4. Verify all memory DIMMS are HP supported (64 MB - C2381A, 128 MB - C2382A), and reseat if necessary.
  5. Turn the printer on.
  6. If no error appears, attempt to verify functionality.
  7. If the error re-appears, press the ENTER key.
  8. Check the printer's current firmware version (Printer Setup Options, Utilities, Statistics, Code Rev) and upgrade if a newer version is available.
  9. Turn the printer off, then on. If no error, attempt to verify functionality.
  10. If the error continues, turn the printer off and remove both end covers from the printer.
  11. Reseat all the connections between the Main PCA and ISS PCA (refer to pgs. 8-64, 8-81 of the service manual).
  12. Turn the printer on. If no error, verify functionality.
  13. If the error re-appears, turn the printer off and replace the ISS PCA (refer to pg. 8-64 of the service manual).
  14. Following replacement, turn the printer on and attempt to verify functionality.
  15. If the problem persists, turn the printer off and replace the Main PCA and the HDD controller (which connects to the new Main PCA). Refer to pg. 8-81, 8-85 of the service manual.
  16. Following replacement, turn the printer on and perform the Backup EEROM Service Utility (instructions below.)
  17. Turn the printer off, then on, and verify functionality.

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. When the "READY" message is displayed on the front panel, scroll to the Printer Setup Options icon and press the ENTER key.
  3. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Utilities and press ENTER.
  4. Press the Up Arrow key and the ENTER key simultaneously.
  5. Select Service Utilities and press ENTER.
  6. Scroll to 1.6 Backup EEROM and press ENTER.
  7. Select the part replaced (Main PCA) and press ENTER.
  8. A message confirming the selection will appear, press ENTER to confirm (if the wrong part is selected, press BACK to cancel).
  9. The printer will perform the backup and display the message, "Backup performed correctly."
  10. Press the BACK key to return to the previous menu.
  11. Press the BACK key again to return to the Service Utilities menu.
  12. Turn the printer off then on and verify functionality.
