HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers - TWI: System Error 0C0040

In this document:

This system error appears when the printer detects that the same area of nozzles does not work in different printheads. The possible causes are either fibers or paper in the Drop Detect sensor, or that the Scan-Axis reference is incorrect. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the error and to replace the necessary parts.

The steps below are designed to achieve remote resolution of the issue. If the troubleshooting steps below appear to resolve the issue, attempt to verify functionality by printing several internal prints. If the issue persists following the steps below, generate a CSO for service.

  1. Turn the printer off, using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.
  2. After 10-15 seconds, turn the main power switch on.
  3. If no error appears, attempt to verify printer functionality.
  4. If the error re-appears, continue with the remaining steps.
  5. Attempt to manually recover the printheads:
    1. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to the Printhead menu (the Printhead icon is on the lower right corner of the front panel display) and press ENTER.
    2. Scroll to Recover Printheads and press ENTER.
    3. Re-cover the offending printhead(s).
  6. If the error re-appears or problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
  7. Check the drop detector for paper or fiber contaminants, and remove as needed (the drop detector is located on the side of the service station). If cleaned, attempt to verify functionality.
  8. If problems persist, perform the calibrations listed below in the order of their appearance:
    1. Scan-Axis calibration
    2. Service Station calibration
    3. Accuracy calibration
  1. If the problem persists, generate a CSO for service (send ALL required parts as listed below).

If any of the troubleshooting steps (including parts replacement) listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Replace the service station assembly (refer to pages 8-69 of the service manual).
  2. Following replacement, turn the printer on (entering Service mode as instructed below).
  3. Perform a Scan-Axis calibration, Service Station calibration, and an Accuracy calibration (in the order listed).
  4. Following the calibrations, turn the printer off, then on, and attempt to verify functionality.
  5. If the problem persists, replace the line sensor (refer to pages 8-53 of the service manual).
  6. Following replacement, turn the printer on (entering Service mode as instructed below).
  7. Access the Service Calibrations menu and perform the Scan-Axis, Service Station, and Accuracy calibrations.
  1. Following the calibrations, turn the printer off, then on and verify printer functionality.

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. When the READY message is displayed on the front-panel, scroll to the Printer Setup Options icon and press ENTER.
  3. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Utilities and press ENTER.
  4. Once inside the Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the ENTER key simultaneously.
  5. Scroll to the necessary menu (Service Tests, Service Utilities, or Service Calibrations) and press ENTER.
  6. Once inside the appropriate menu, scroll to the needed test and press ENTER to start the test.
