HP Designjet ColorPro Printers - Continuous Paper Pick Up or Feeding from Tray 1 or Tray 2

When a job is sent, the printer picks up a piece of paper and prints on the first page. After printing less than a quarter page on the second sheet, the printer picks up a third sheet of paper and continues to print. This may happen on several pages or just two pages. Other symptoms include smearing of ink on printouts, all paper being ejected, paper jams, and one page documents being printed on several sheets of paper. Check the paper to ensure that it is within specifications, then perform paper path tests. If the tests confirm the printer's behavior, replace the whole unit. Checking the media and performing paper path tests

1. Check the media to confirm that it is within specification.
2. To confirm, perform a paper path test from both Tray 1 and Tray 2, because behavior will only occur from trays 1 and 2.
3. Perform paper path test from Tray 3, because this behavior will not occur from this tray.
4. Check all paper paths for any obstructions.
5. Inspect paper guides on trays and confirm that the paper is loaded correctly. Do not overload trays.
• Tray 1 holds 10 sheets of paper
• Tray 2 holds 50 sheets of paper
• Tray 3 holds 150 sheets of paper

Replace whole unit

Testing

Upon replacement of the whole unit, activate the Tray 2 paper path test using the front key panel. Test for about 100 pages. If no multiple feed occurs, the problem has been solved.

Activating the paper test

1. Press the Menu button on the control panel until Diagnostics Menu is selected.
2. Press Item until Perform Tray x Paper Path Test is selected.
3. Press Select to perform the test.

NOTE: The test will only terminate when the paper in the specific tray runs out or when the printer is turned off.
