HP Designjet 800 Series Printers - TWI: System Error 05:10

A 05:10 error on the front panel of the printer indicates a formatter card failure. This issue usually does not require on-site service, as the formatter card is a user-replaceable part. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the error and to replace the necessary parts.

The steps below are designed to achieve remote resolution of the issue. If the troubleshooting steps below appear to resolve the issue, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If the issue persists following the steps below, generate a CSO for service.

The lights on the formatter card may also provide some information on the condition of the card:

• The green LED indicates that power is being supplied to the unit.

• If the red LED is flashing, the formatter card has failed.

• The yellow LED should be flashing. If yellow light is not flashing, it indicates that the formatter card has failed.

1. Remove the parallel cable and the LAN connection (if necessary) from the back of the printer.

   NOTE: If using a parallel cable, verify that the cable is less than three meters long and is IEEE-1284 compliant.

2. Turn the printer off.

3. Remove the LAN card.

4. Remove the formatter card.

5. Install the formatter card in the original LAN card slot and the LAN card in the original formatter card slot.

6. Turn the printer on and see if the error re-occurs.

7. If the error returns, replace the formatter card (do not create a CSO as this is user replaceable).

   NOTE: The HP Designjet 800 series driver cannot print without the formatter card; however, a workaround that will allow the customer to continue to print can be achieved. Remove the formatter card, and install the standard HP Designjet 500 PCL driver which will allow the customer to continue printing. Some features of the printer and/or driver might not be available when using the standard HP Designjet 500 series PCL driver.
   NOTE: The HP Designjet 500 series printer might also have a formatter card installed (optional). If so, the same workaround listed above will work for an HP Designjet 500 series with a formatter card installed.

8. If no error is reported, turn the printer off.

9. Remove and re-install the formatter and LAN cards back to their original slots.

10. Turn the printer on.

11. If no error is reported, verify printer functionality.

12. If problems persist, generate a CSO for service (send ALL required parts as listed below).

If any of the steps (including parts replacement) listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.
NOTE: If Removal and Installation instructions are needed for reference during any repairs performed, refer to the HP Designjet 500 and 800 Series Service Manual available on the Computer Care Web site (http://www.computercareonline.com/documents.php) for review or download.

1. Replace the Electronics module. Refer to the Service Manual (pages 8-24 through 8-26 and pages 8-5 and 8-6) for instructions.

2. Following replacement, turn the printer on.

3. Load media into the printer.

4. Highlight Printer Information in the printer's Setup menu and press the Enter key.

5. If the formatter card was detected, View and Print will appear. Select Print. In a few minutes the printer will print the Service Print. The Service Print will print only if the formatter card is installed and functioning.
