HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Printhead Check Error

In this document:

The squares that are flashing indicate the ink systems that have failed. If the message contains no squares, the procedure has failed because of a problem that is not related to specific printheads. Some causes may be type or color of the media, dirty nozzles, or poor electrical contact between printhead and Carriage. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and successfully printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Verify the media being used is Hewlett-Packard media or media approved by Hewlett-Packard.
  2. Perform a Media Qualification to verify the correct media setting is being used for the media that is loaded.
  3. Check the environmental operating conditions (temperature and humidity affect output quality).
  4. Press the Down Arrow key to check the printheads.
  5. Open the top cover and remove the affected printhead(s).
  6. Attempt to reseat the printhead(s). If the printer accepts all printheads, but still fails the printhead check, replace the lens cover and try again.
  7. If unsuccessful, remove all the printheads.
  8. Using a lint free cloth dampened with water, clean the contacts in each carriage slot and on all printheads. This will remove any dirt or ink that may be preventing a good connection.
  9. Reinstall one printhead at a time and watch the front panel display for the corresponding square to change to a steady square indication. Remove each printhead before inserting another into the carriage.
  10. Continue testing the remaining printheads, with one printhead in the carriage at a time.
  11. If any printheads fail, break the keyed tabs just below the label on front of printhead and insert it into one of the other known good slots.
  1. If the printhead still shows bad in second slot, replace the affected ink system and attempt to verify functionality.
  2. If the printhead shows good in the second carriage slot or replacing the ink system was no help, replace the carriage and trailing cable (refer to pg. 8-42, 8-36 of the Service Manual).
  3. Perform Calibrations C01, C02, C03, C05, C06, C07 (2500/3500 only), and C08 (instructions listed below).
  4. Following calibrations, verify functionality.

Performing Service Calibrationsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message "Status/Ready" is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations and press Enter when the required calibration is displayed.
