HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Noise Along the Carriage Path

In this document:

Noise along the carriage path can usually be attributed to a few issues: the rubbing of two surfaces together due to lack of lubrication or a moving object hitting a stationary object. A few examples could be dirty or dry slider rod, damage to carriage belt, or debris in the back guide. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Following initialization, press the Replace Ink Systems key on the front panel.
  3. When the carriage has stopped moving and is accessible, turn the printer off.
  4. Lift the top cover.
  5. Using a lint-free cloth dampened with warm water, clean the carriage rails along the entire length of the carriage's rails.
  1. Completely dry all water from the rails.
  2. Move the carriage to middle of print area.
  3. Use the oil applicator tool to apply synthetic oil to the carriage rails.
  4. Manually move the carriage from side-to-side to lubricate the bushings and evenly distribute the oil across the entire carriage path. Repeat if necessary.
  5. Examine the carriage belt for wear, damage, or fraying. Replace belt if needed (refer to pages 8-39 of the Service Manual).
  1. Using a lint-free cloth dampened with water, clean the encoder strip from left end to right end. Move the carriage and cutter assemblies as needed, to reach end of strip.
  2. Inspect the encoder strip for damage, replace if needed (refer to pages 8-32 of the Service Manual).
  3. Continue with the next section (D03 carriage axis test).

D03 Carriage axis (Y-axis)back to table of contents

  1. Enter the Diagnostic menu (instructions listed below).
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Scroll to D03 Carriage Axis and press Enter.
  4. The carriage should begin to move across the Y-axis.
  5. Listen and watch for signs of friction or problems with the Y-motor.
  6. If excess friction is observed along the carriage rails, lubricate the rails again when the test completes, and repeat the carriage axis test.
  7. If the test fails or a problem with carriage movement is detected, replace the Y-axis motor (refer to pages 8-45 of the Service Manual).
  8. Following Y-motor replacement, perform Service Calibrations C01, C02, C03, C05, C06, C07 (HP Designjet 2500 and 3500 only), and C08. Attempt to verify functionality.
  9. If the test passes, or problems persist following replacement of parts, continue with the remaining steps.

D10 Cutter testback to table of contents

  1. Enter the Diagnostic menu (instructions listed below).
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Scroll to D10 Cutter and press Enter.
  4. While the printer is testing, a row of **** (asterisks) will be displayed on the front panel.
  5. Watch the carriage and cutter interaction, and movement during the test.
  6. When the test is completed, a "D1000 Done" message will appear on the front panel.
  7. If the carriage picks up the cutter assembly and runs it along the length of the printer twice, the test has passed. If so, attempt to verify functionality.
  8. If the test failed, replace the cutter assembly (refer to pages 8-50 of the Service Manual).
  9. Following replacement, perform the D10 cutter test again, and attempt to verify functionality.
  10. If the problem persists, replace the carriage and trailing cable (refer to pages 8-42 and 8-36 of the Service Manual).
  11. Following replacement of the carriage and trailing cable, perform Calibrations C01, C02, C03, C05, C06, C07 (HP Designjet 2500 and 3500 only), and C08 (instructions listed below).
  12. Verify printer functionality.

Performing Service Calibrations or Service Diagnostic Testsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message "Status/Ready" is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations or Diagnostics and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations or Diagnostic tests and press Enter when the required calibration/test is displayed.
