HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Ink System Error 66-YYYY

In this document:

The printheads indicated by flashing squares have failed, either during printhead initialization or printing. The printer may have detected an unusual electrical or thermal signal from the printhead that may require attention. The most likely causes are ink cartridge empty or an internal printhead problem. The error data is as follows: 1000-Yellow, 0100-Cyan, 0010-Magenta, or 0001-Black (example YYYY=0110: Cyan and Magenta). Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Press the Down Arrow key to check the printheads.
  2. Open the top cover window and remove the printheads indicated as failed.
  3. Reseat the failed printhead(s), try twice (if needed), as contacts might be worn.
  1. If unsuccessful, remove all the printheads.
  2. Clean the electrical contacts in all Carriage slots and on all printheads using a lint free cloth dampened with water. This will remove any dirt or ink that may be preventing a good connection.
  3. Reinstall one printhead at a time and watch the front panel display for the corresponding square to change to a steady square. Remove each printhead before inserting another one into the Carriage.
  4. Continue testing the remaining printheads, one at a time.
  5. If any printhead(s) fail, break the keyed tabs just below the label on the front of the printhead and insert it into one of the other known good slots on the Carriage.
  1. If the printhead still shows bad in the second slot, replace the failing ink system and attempt to verify functionality.
  2. If the suspect printhead is accepted in another slot or problems persist following ink system replacement, replace the Carriage and Trailing cable (refer to pg. 8-42, 8-36 of the Service Manual).
  3. Perform Calibrations C01, C02, C03, C05, C06, C07 (2500 and 3500 only), and C08 (instructions listed below).

Performing Service Calibrations or Service Diagnostic Testsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message "Status/Ready" is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations or Diagnostics and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations or Diagnostic Tests and press Enter when the required calibration/test is displayed.
