HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - Steady READY + MEDIA LEDs (Steady DM)

This system error indicates an X-axis shutdown. Some possible causes may be friction or obstruction in the X-axis, problem with X-axis encoder cable, X-axis motor, or electronics module. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

  1. Turn power off.
  2. Lift top cover and lower the media lever (ensure the pinch arms release pressure on the paper).
  3. Carefully move carriage and/or cutter assemblies to home positions.
  4. Remove paper from printer.
  1. Remove any small pieces of paper that may be stuck in paper path. A manila file folder may be inserted into the paper path to clear any obstructions that may be unseen.
  2. If obstruction is removed, try loading both roll and sheet (preferably larger than 8.5 x 11) media twice, for each to prove functionality.
  3. If loading media is unsuccessful, or no problem is found with the paper path, continue with performing a Media Axis Test (listed below).

    1. Hold down the REPRINT key and turn the printer on.
    2. Continue to hold the REPRINT key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
    3. Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
    1. Hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and turn the printer on.
    2. Continue to hold the MEDIA SOURCE key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
    1. Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.

Media Axis (X-Axis) testback to table of contents

  1. Ensure top cover is closed and pinch arm lever is up.
  2. Enter Service Mode 1.
  3. Press the MEDIA LOAD key to start the test.
  4. If the Glossy LED is steady (on) the test has passed. Attempt to verify functionality, if problem persists continue with performing the electronics test (listed below).
  5. If the Glossy LED is flashing the test has failed. Replace paper drive motor (refer to pg. 8-23 of the HP Designjet 400 Series Service Manual).
  1. Following replacement, attempt to verify functionality.

Electronics testback to table of contents

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Ensure top cover is closed and the pinch arm lever is up.
  3. Enter Service Mode 1.
  4. Press the MEDIA SOURCE + REPRINT keys to start the test.
  5. All LEDs will turn off, and there will be no movement from printer.
  6. Monitor the front panel LEDs.
  7. A steady Sheet LED indicates the test passed. Verify printer functionality if the electronics test passes.
  8. A flashing Sheet LED indicates the test has failed. Replace the electronics module (refer to pg. 8-13).
  9. Following replacement, perform an Accuracy calibration, and verify printer functionality.
