Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Lift the top cover and lower the media lever. Ensure that the Pincharms release the pressure on the paper.
  3. Carefully move the Carriage and/or Cutter assemblies to home positions.
  4. Remove paper from the printer.
  5. Remove any small pieces of paper that may be stuck in paper path.
  1. If the obstruction is removed, try loading both roll and sheet (preferably larger than 8.5 x 11) paper two times each to prove functionality.
  2. If loading media is unsuccessful, or no problem is found with the paper path, continue with the remaining steps.
  3. Turn the printer on.
  1. Load a roll of paper.
  2. When the Ready LED turns on, press the FORM FEED key.
  3. The Carriage should move to the right and pick up the Cutter, then cut a small strip of paper and return the Cutter and Carriage to their home positions.
  4. Repeat the test a few times, as the issue may be intermittent.

Clean/Lube carriage slider rodback to table of contents

  1. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe all foreign materials from slider rod. Apply two or three drops of lubricant to a clean lint-free cloth and wipe the top and back of the slider rod. Ensure the entire length of rod is lubricated. Move the Carriage and Cutter as needed.
  2. Manually move Cutter and Carriage along slider rod to lubricate bushings of both assemblies. Move each assembly left and right three to four times.
  3. Place the Cutter and Carriage Assemblies back to their respective home positions.
  4. If no other problems are noted, load media and attempt to prove functionality.
  5. If excessive friction is noticed, apply another application of oil and repeat Steps 2-4.
  6. If excess friction has been eliminated, continue with the Carriage Axis test (listed below).
  7. If excess friction still remains, replace the Carriage and Cutter (refer to pages 8-37, 8-21 of the HP Designjet 400 Series Service Manual).
  1. Following replacement, perform an Accuracy Calibration and attempt to verify functionality.

Entering Service mode 1 and 2back to table of contents

    1. Hold the REPRINT key down and turn the printer on.
    2. Continue to hold the REPRINT key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
    3. Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
    1. Hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and turn the printer on.
    2. Continue to hold the MEDIA SOURCE key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
    1. Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.

Carriage Axis (Y-axis) Testback to table of contents

  1. Enter Service Mode 1.
  2. To start the Carriage Axis test press the REPRINT key.
  3. Carriage should move toward right hand side of printer.
  1. A steady Fast LED indicates the test passed. Continue performing the Modular test as instructed below.
  2. A flashing Fast LED indicates the test failed. Continue with Step 6.
  3. Gently clean the encoder strip using a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
  1. Inspect the Carriage belt for excessive wear or damage. Replace belt if needed (refer to page 8-41).
  2. Rerun the Carriage Axis test.
  3. If problems persist run the Modular test.

Modular testback to table of contents

  1. Enter Service Mode 1.
  2. Press the MEDIA SOURCE key to start the test. Carriage should move toward right side.
  3. If the test passes all LEDs will be steady. Attempt to verify printer functionality.
  1. A flashing Align Media LED indicates the Electronics module (not expected).
  2. A flashing Fast LED indicates the Y-axis Motor. Replace the Y-axis motor (refer to page 8-18). Following replacement attempt to verify printer functionality.
  3. A flashing Best LED possibly indicates the Encoder Sensor.
  4. Open the top cover and manually move the Carriage along the Carriage path while observing the Best LED.
  5. If Best LED continues to flash when moving Carriage, replace the Carriage assembly (refer to page 8-37).
  6. Following replacement, perform an Accuracy calibration.

Accuracy calibrationback to table of contents

  1. Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet approximately 24 x 36 inches, 61 x 91 cm (D-size). If sheet media is not available, roll media can be used if cut into a 24 X 36 inch sheet. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold in the MEDIA SOURCE key and turn the printer on (entering Service Mode 2).
  3. Set the Media Type on the front panel to Coated Paper.
  4. Load the film with the matte (dull) side down, in portrait orientation.
  5. When the Ready LED lights up, press the REPRINT key.
  1. The printer will eject the sheet, and the Load Media LED will light up.
  2. Unload the sheet from the printer.
  3. Wait until the ink on the sheet is dry.
  4. Cut the sheet along the dotted line and reload facedown into the printer, in the direction indicated by the arrows on the calibration plot.
  1. Unload the sheet from the printer.
  2. The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
  3. Turn the printer off then on, and verify printer functionality.
