HP Designjet CP Series Printers - System Error 010036

In this document:

It is important to note that there are two different 010036 system errors, 010036 and 010036 - 0000XX00. System error 010036 is an ADC failure on the Main PCA that is generally caused by a Trailing cable or Carriage assembly problem. System error 010036 - 0000XX00 is a short in one or more motors that has damaged the Electronics module. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and to replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting steps for System error 010036 - 0000XX00back to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

    1. Turn off the printer (using the power switch in back).
    2. If using a Voltmeter, continue with Step 7.
    3. If a Voltmeter is not available, connect the Tester PCA to the Electronics module (per the instructions shipped with Tester PCA) and continue with Step 4.
    4. Hold down the Form Feed and Cut key, and turn the power on.
    1. The Tester PCA detects if there is a short in the DC motors (Carriage and media axis), stepper motors, or defective connections.
    2. Note all failing motors for replacement, and continue with Step 8.
    3. Ohm all motors.
      1. Check all eight motors by measuring the resistance values of the connectors.
      2. Make sure to check the resistance between pins 1-3 and 4-6 (the X-Axis and Y-Axis motors only have two connectors/pins).
      3. If any of the motors are shorted, the value measured will be 0-5 Ohms.
    1. Replace the Electronics module, and all failing motors found in previous troubleshooting steps. If, after Ohming all eight motors, no bad motors are found, replace Electronics module (refer to pg. 8-6 of the Service Manual).
    1. Following replacement of the Electronics module, the printer must be turned on in Normal mode to choose the appropriate language. Once the language has been chosen, turn the printer off, and continue with Step 10.
    2. Perform calibrations C02, C03, and C08 (instructions listed below). All other calibrations will be completed when the printer is turned on in Normal mode (during printer initialization).

Troubleshooting steps for System error 010036back to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn the printer off and un-plug the main power cord.
  2. Disconnect the Trailing cable from the Electronics module.
  3. Plug the power cord back in, and turn the printer on.
  4. If the error code remains the same (010036), replace the Electronics module (refer to pg. 8-6 of the Service Manual). Following replacement, perform calibrations C02, C03, and C08 as instructed below then verify functionality.
  5. If the error code changes to 010037, replace the Trailing cable and Carriage assembly (refer to pg. 8-36, 8-42 of the Service Manual).
  6. Following replacement, perform calibrations C02, C03, and C08 (instructions listed below). All other calibrations will be completed when printer is turned on in Normal mode (during printer initialization).
  7. Following successful calibrations, attempt to verify functionality.
  8. If the error continues, replace the Electronics module (refer to pg. 8-6 of the Service Manual).
  9. Following replacement, perform calibrations C02, C03, and C08 as instructed below then verify functionality.

Performing service calibrationsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message Status/Ready is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu display and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.
  5. Use the arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations and press Enter when the required calibration is displayed.
