HP Designjet 700 Series Printers - System Errors 010030, 010032, 010033, and 010034

System errors 01003x are caused by a communication problem between the printers Carriage and Main PCA. The Carriage and Trailing cable are the most common cause of these system errors. Follow the instructions listed below to accurately troubleshoot the issue, replace the appropriate parts, and perform the necessary calibrations.

Troubleshooting steps

1. Turn the printer on.
2. After printer initialization is complete, press ENTER.

NOTE: Certain printer failures can occur that will prevent the printer from completing initialization. If this problem occurs, turn the printer off and press and hold down the ENTER and UP ARROW buttons while turning on the printer. This will allow access to the Service tests submenu.

3. Use the ARROW buttons to scroll to the Utilities menu display.
4. Press the ENTER button.
5. Simultaneously press the ENTER and UP ARROW buttons to access the Service Tests submenu.
6. Using the ARROW buttons, scroll to 6 Main-Carriage Com and press ENTER.
7. Three messages will appear on the front-panel display as each circuit is tested.
8. If the test passes, the Pass Test / Press Enter message is displayed on the front panel.

NOTE: If the Main-Carriage Com test passes, turn the printer off, then on again. Verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is proven, no parts need to be replaced. If problems persist, continue with replacing the Carriage and Trailing cable.

9. If the test fails, an error code will be displayed on the front panel.
10. Ensure the grounding gaskets are properly installed in the Main PCA Enclosure. If incorrectly installed, fix the gaskets and attempt to verify functionality before continuing with the remaining steps.

NOTE: If the Main PCA has previously been removed/replaced, the grounding straps ("gaskets") may have been offset or misplaced, which can cause these system errors to occur.

11. Replace the Carriage and Trailing cable.
12. Reassemble the printer.
13. Perform the calibrations listed below in the order of their appearance.

Drop Detect calibration

1. Access the Service Tests submenu.
2. Use the ARROW button to scroll to 1C Drop Detect Cal and press ENTER.
3. The display shows the message Calibrating, indicating that the calibration is in progress. Press ENTER when the calibration is complete.
4. Stay in Service mode to perform the next calibration.

Line Sensor calibration

1. In the Service Test submenu, scroll to 2C Line sensor cal, and press ENTER.
2. The display will show Calibrating Green LED Light, indicating that the calibration is in progress.
3. When the calibration is complete, the display will show Green LED Light # _ _ / press Enter. The number shown corresponds to the intensity of the LED light, which will vary for different types of media. The normal range of the number should be between 0 and 56.
4. Press ENTER when the calibration is complete.
5. Stay in Service mode to perform the next calibration.

Accuracy calibration

1. Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet of approximately D-size (61 x 91 cm, 24 x 36 inches). Roll media may also be used. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.

NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available, use HP Coated media when performing an accuracy calibration.

2. Remove all media already loaded in the printer before performing the calibration.
3. In the Service Tests submenu, scroll to 3C Accuracy Cal, and press ENTER.
4. The message Create pattern/measure pattern appears.
5. Press the UP arrow button to select Create pattern.
6. The message Status/Calibrating appears while the printer is calibrating.
7. When the printer has finished calibrating, the message Load media for calibration appears.
8. Load the media. If using D-size media, load the short edge as the leading edge in D-size printers and the long edge as the leading edge in E-size printers.
9. When the media is loaded, the printer will automatically begin to plot the pattern.
10. The message Status/Printing appears while printing.
11. Remove the media when the printer is finished printing.
12. The message Create pattern/Measure pattern appears.
13. Press the DOWN ARROW button to select Measure Pattern.
14. Rotate the plot so the edge with the arrows point toward the printer, and reload the plot with the arrow edge print-side down.
15. The printer will load the plot and measure the alignment marks using the line sensor on the Carriage.
16. If the calibration passes, the message Success Calibration/Press Enter appears.
17. Press the PREVIOUS key until Ready is displayed on the printer's front panel.
18. Turn off, and turn on the printer before verifying printer functionality.

Verify functionality

Print several internal prints (E or D size).
